In a significant move that has the fashion world abuzz, Givenchy announced the appointment of Sarah Burton as its new creative director today, effective immediately. A renowned designer with an impressive pedigree, Burton will be responsible for steering the creative vision of Givenchy’s women’s and men’s collections.
“It is a great honour to be joining the beautiful house of Givenchy, it is a jewel,” said Burton in a press statement released today. She added that she was “excited to be able to write the next chapter in the story of this iconic house and to bring to Givenchy my own vision, sensibility and beliefs.”

Burton’s journey to the top of the fashion industry has been marked by critical acclaim and prestigious accolades. Born in Macclesfield and educated in Manchester, she honed her skills at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, graduating in 1997. She joined Alexander McQueen in 1996, and quickly rose through the ranks under the tutelage of the eponymous designer himself. In 2010, Burton was appointed creative director, a position she held until her departure in October 2023.

During her tenure at Alexander McQueen, Burton produced women’s and men’s collections that garnered widespread critical praise, cementing her reputation as a visionary in the industry. Her crowning achievement came in 2011 when she was chosen to design Kate Middleton’s wedding dress, for which she was awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE)—a testament to her exceptional talent and craftsmanship.
“Her unique vision and approach to fashion will be invaluable to this iconic Maison, known for its audacity and haute couture,” said Sidney Toledano, chairman of the Givenchy board. “I am convinced that her creative leadership will contribute to the future success and international standing of the Maison.”
Burton is slated to present her first collection for Givenchy in March 2025.
