YANGON, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's oldest zoo, Yangon Zoological Garden, celebrated its 119th anniversary on Friday.

A three-day event is being held at the zoo, featuring animal presentations, a gallery sharing knowledge about wildlife animals, dance performances, games for children, and a market fair, Than Myint Tun, warden of the Garden, told Xinhua.

This year's highlight is a special presentation of red pandas brought from Nay Pyi Taw, he said.

"Our zoo provides a place for relaxation, educates visitors about wildlife, and has been preserved for future generations. Now, it has reached its 119th anniversary," he added.

Lin Lin, 37, a visitor, shared her experience, saying, "I brought my two children here to enjoy the zoo's 119th anniversary celebration and to give them a chance to see the animals."

"Some of these animals are rare and can't be found in our surroundings. The zoo plays an important role in animal preservation and serves as an educational spot for children to learn about wildlife," she said.

At present, the zoo, which opened in January 1906, is home to over 1,400 animals from 135 species, including mammals, birds, and reptiles.■
