World No. 1 Wang Chuqin reached the last eight by prevailing in straight games in an all-Chinese encounter, with seventh-ranked Lin Gaoyuan knocked out at the WTT Champions Macao.

MACAO, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- World No. 1 Wang Chuqin of China defeated his compatriot Xu Yingbin 11-7, 12-10, 11-9 on Thursday, advancing to the men's singles quarterfinals at the 2024 World Table Tennis (WTT) Champions Macao.

Wang said that mindset was the key to his win. "He [Xu] didn't put too much pressure on me at the start, so I gradually found a good rhythm in the match," Wang said.

The afternoon session saw world No. 7 Lin Gaoyuan of China stunned by Chinese Taipei teenager Kao Cheng-Jui 1-3. Kao said that the result went beyond his expectations, and he will continue to do his best in the next round.

China's youngster Lin Shidong went the full distance to upset world No. 8 Tomokazu Harimoto of Japan.

On the women's side, China's Chen Xingtong came from behind to defeat Swedish defensive player Linda Bergstrom, advancing to the last eight with a 3-1 victory. World No. 4 Wang Yidi of China smashed Brazil's Bruna Takahashi in straight games in the evening.

The WTT Champions Macao runs until Sunday, with the men's and women's quarterfinals scheduled on Friday. ■
