LONDON, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Manchester City end the weekend as the new Premier League leaders after Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw away to Arsenal on Sunday.

Although Arne Slot's side could consider the result to be two points dropped, they twice came back from behind against a rival missing several key players through injury and suspension.

Bukayo Saka put Arsenal ahead in the ninth minute, after cutting inside his marker and scoring with a shot at the far post, but Virgil van Dijk headed Liverpool level just nine minutes later.

Mikel Merino's powerful header put Arsenal ahead again just before halftime, and it looked as if Arsenal could hold on for a win until a wonderful combination between Trent Alexander-Arnold and Darwin Nunez ended with Mohamed Salah's 81st-minute equalizer.

Cole Palmer scored the winning goal and gave an assist for Nicolas Jackson to open the scoring as Chelsea beat Newcastle United 2-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea were the better side, although the result was in doubt after Alexander Isak's 32nd-minute equalizer canceled out Jackson's finish, but Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca will be pleased with his side's defensive display after Palmer's powerful near post finish early in the second half.

A late penalty scored by Jarrod Bowen gave West Ham United a 2-1 win at home to Manchester United.

The game looked to be heading for a draw after Crysencio Summerville's far post finish after an assist from Danny Ings put West Ham ahead in the 74th minute, only for Casemiro's close-range header to level the score seven minutes later.

Matthijs de Ligt then committed the decisive penalty in a chaotic moment in the Man Utd penalty area, with the VAR spotting his collision with Ings as a host of players went for a high ball.

Bowen had a long wait, before putting the penalty into the corner to take a lot of pressure off West Ham coach Julen Lopetegui.

Jean-Philippe Mateta scored the only goal as Crystal Palace claimed a deserved first win of the season at home to Tottenham to lift his side out of the bottom three.

Tottenham huffed and puffed looking for an equalizer after the break, but Palace were the better side on the day.

On Saturday, Erling Haaland's fifth-minute goal was enough for Manchester City to beat bottom of the table Southampton, although his side missed plenty of chances in the rest of the game. ■
