CAIRO, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Mohammed Samy, a 13-year-old Egyptian boy who suffers from autism, felt very happy watching a Chinese dance troupe performing their traditional show at al-Horiya public park in downtown Cairo.
"I came to the park with my family and we did not know that there was a show. I'm very lucky that this beautiful show took place today," he said.
The show lit up his mood, Samy said, adding that he admired the music, dance and traditional dresses of the Chinese artists.
Samy was referring to a dance performance on Sunday by a troupe from the Quanzhou Minnan Folk Song and Dance Heritage Center during the eighth edition of Awladna International Forum for Arts of the Gifted. This annual forum for children with special needs runs from September 20 to 27 this year and features live performances of artists from 53 countries.
Xie Zhiyang, leader of the Chinese dance troupe, believes the forum offers participants an important opportunity to better understand the Chinese culture, and "a great opportunity (for the troupe members) to get to know Egyptian culture and art closely."
The Quanzhou Minnan Folk Song and Dance Heritage Center has created and performed over 100 distinctive songs, dances, and dramas over the past 60 years to promote Chinese intangible cultural heritage, and has organized tours in more than 20 countries.
"Making others happy, especially to cheer up the ailed and disabled, is a basic goal for us as artists, so today we are here to put a smile on the faces of these children," Xie said.
"The show is amazing … my son is really happy, and he actively interacted with the artists," said Magda Ibrahim, a mother of a 10-year-old child with physical disabilities.
"I'm very grateful to this amazing team … I will personally thank them after the show," she said.■
