Club Bâtard, Hong Kong’s newest private members’ club, is the sort of place that whispers, “Welcome, you’ve arrived”, and it does so with three full floors and 18,000 square feet of indulgence inside the Pedder Building in Central.
First floor: Le Closand the wine cellar
On the first floor, Le Clos, inspired by France’s most precious vineyards: the clos—those walled-off, carefully guarded plots that produce some of the world’s finest wines, sets the scene. It’s a restaurant where you can grab everything from breakfast to dinner, late-night drinks and snacks, with familiar Asian and Western dishes available throughout the day.

The char kway teow (stir-fried rice noodles), in particular, is worth trying. After sampling different spots in Penang, the team found the ideal recipe, sweet-talked the owner to share it, and have since perfected it to bring that Malaysian flavour to Central.

Then there’s the wine. And what a selection it is. The club’s pièce de résistance is its 2,500-square-foot, glass-fronted wine cellar that spans all three floors, housing over 10,000 bottles. More than just a pretty sight, this cellar connects each floor via a dedicated staircase and allows sommeliers easy access to an impressive collection. Even better, all the wines are offered to members at retail prices. No restaurant markups, and no need to refinance your mortgage to afford a decent Burgundy.

Second floor: French elegance at Bâtard
On the second floor, Bâtard—the French restaurant that started it all—continues its journey from a cosy spot in Sai Ying Pun to something altogether more ambitious. Known for elevating French cuisine to pair with world-class wines, Bâtard now offers members an even more exclusive experience, with 108 seats in the main dining room, and two private dining rooms overlooking the kitchen.

The dining here is designed to delight the most discerning palate, with French classics crafted by chef Jun Kai and his team, expertly paired with fine wines from the club’s vast collection. The space is elegant yet approachable, offering a view of the culinary action while allowing diners to relax and savour both their meals and their wine without any pretence. Della Tang, one of China’s most highly regarded young wine experts, is on hand to offer her expertise too.

Third floor: Cantonese comfort at Hop Sze and whisky at OBE
The third floor gives you a double act: Hop Sze and OBE. Hop Sze, led by Wong Wing-kuen, offers Cantonese classics that feel right at home in this new, sophisticated setting. But don’t worry, the charm of Wong’s homestyle cooking is still intact. There is also the addition of a siu mei (roast meats) menu and weekend dim sum lunch to enjoy. The new space offers 88 seats and six private dining rooms, making it ideal for both intimate dinners and family gatherings.

Just next door, whisky lovers will find OBE, Club Bâtard’s whisky bar. Led by whisky expert Diego Lanza, OBE is a 35-seat bar dedicated to showcasing the finest whiskies, many influenced by the ‘Old Bottle Effect’, or the changing of a whisky’s flavour over time. With its intimate setting and rare selection of bottles, OBE is a sanctuary for those serious about their spirits.

An exclusive experience with events to come
Club Bâtard offers more than just exquisite dining and drinks—it’s a full experience tailored to its members, who can bring up to 14 guests (as long as they are present). Co-founders Michael Wu and Randy See have created a space where fine wines, whiskies and food are enjoyed without pretension. With all wines priced at retail, it’s a rare opportunity to indulge in the best without the typical mark-ups.
And there’s more to come. Club Bâtard is set to launch a member’s app, which will feature their events programme, making it easier for members to keep up with the club’s happenings. Whether you’re after a French fine-dining experience, Cantonese comfort food or an intimate whisky tasting, Club Bâtard delivers it all under one luxurious roof in Central.
