BEIJING, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.42 percent to 3,364.65 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.02 percent lower at 10,604.01 points.
The combined turnover of these two indices stood at 1.66 trillion yuan (about 230.77 billion U.S. dollars), down from 1.72 trillion yuan recorded on the previous trading day.
Shares related to coal and petroleum led the gains, while those in the ceramic and papermaking industries suffered major losses.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 1.43 percent to close at 2,213.41 points on Wednesday. ■
