BEIJING, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Here are the latest Chinese sports headlines from the past week:

1. Chinese athletes win record 194 major titles in 2024

Chinese athletes won a total of 194 major titles - in Olympic Games, World Championships and World Cups - in 2024, marking a record high, according to a report released by the State General Administration of Sport on December 26.

84 of these major titles came from Olympic disciplines, including short track speed skating, shooting, table tennis and tennis.

Chinese athletes broke 19 world records in 2024, seven in Olympic disciplines.

2. China witnesses 313 million people engaging in winter sports after Beijing 2022

Around 313 million people have engaged in ice and snow sports or related leisure activities in China since the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, as revealed on December 25 at the annual National Sports Bureau Directors Conference.

Nearly two months ago, China unveiled an ambitious plan to grow its ice and snow economy, targeting winter sports, tourism, and equipment manufacturing as key drivers of economic growth, with a projected value of 1.5 trillion yuan (approximately 211 billion U.S. dollars) by 2030.

3. Gao, Zhang inspire China to opening win at United Cup

Gao Xinyu came back from one set down and Zhang Zhizhen was almost flawless as China started the mixed team United Cup with a 3-0 victory over Brazil in Perth on December 27.

Gao, No. 175 on the world rankings, overcame cramp to edge world No. 17 Beatriz Haddad Maia 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 in a three-hour, 22-minute thriller that was the longest women's singles match in the tournament's history to give China a 1-0 lead, before Zhang thrashed Thiago Monteiro 6-3, 6-0 in the men's singles.

He went on to prevail in the mixed doubles together with Zhang Shuai, beating Brazil's Carolina Alves and Rafael Matos 6-4, 7-5.

4. Chinese table tennis stars Fan and Chen quit world rankings

Olympic champions Fan Zhendong and Chen Meng announced their withdrawal from the world rankings on December 27, citing new regulations imposed by World Table Tennis (WTT).

According to their announcements on social media, both of them have formally signed a notification declaring their "retirement from all ITTF-sanctioned events" on December 23.

As defined in the ITTF Statutes, the ITTF sanctioned events include the events sanctioned by WTT.

The ITTF rankings, which are updated dynamically, rely on players' performances across a rolling schedule of sanctioned events.

5. Snooker world No. 1 Trump becomes Hong Kong resident under talent scheme

World snooker No. 1 Judd Trump has obtained Hong Kong residency under a talent scheme known as the Quality Migrant Admission Scheme, the Immigration Department of the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) said on December 24.

Trump, 35, is the latest sporting star to take up residency in Hong Kong, joining fellow Englishman Ronnie O'Sullivan, a seven-time world snooker champion, and former NBA star Stephon Marbury of the United States. ■
