New energy accounts for 64 pct of Xinjiang's total power capacity

URUMQI, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, rich in wind and solar resources, has built six 10-million-kilowatt-level new energy bases, with its new energy installed capacity reaching 167 million kilowatts, accounting for 64 percent of the region's total power capacity.

The achievement was highlighted in the government work report during the ongoing regional legislative session, underscoring the region's commitment to green development.

Among the six major new energy bases, Hami City stands out for its vast wind resource area of 51,600 square kilometers and annual sunshine hours ranging from 3,170 to 3,380, making it one of China's sunniest regions.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), Hami added 23.24 million kilowatts of new energy capacity, now leading Xinjiang with a total exceeding 37 million kilowatts.

The expansion of new energy capacity has been matched by a greater absorption of clean power. In 2025, Xinjiang's green electricity transaction volume reached 43.43 billion kilowatt-hours, a 230 percent year-on-year increase, setting a record high. This translates to reducing standard coal consumption by 13.13 million tonnes and cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 35.47 million tonnes.

Song Xueqiang, director of the trading department at Xinjiang Power Exchange Center, said that new energy provides a "green foundation" for Xinjiang's economic growth, promoting the region's low-carbon transformation and high-quality development. ■
