Late victim’s estate sues former Hong Kong bus driver over horror crash that decapitated her

A former Hong Kong bus driver jailed for dangerous driving over a crash that decapitated a passenger three years ago has been sued by the victim's estate administrator for negligence.

Man Chun-pun and his then employer Citybus also face a second lawsuit from a survivor who lodged a similar claim to the High Court, after he accepted responsibility in court.

Man, now 63, was given a 45-month prison term in 2018, following his guilty plea to one count of dangerous driving causing death, and another of causing grievous bodily harm.

The fatal accident took place on January 14, 2017 when Man suddenly suffered a dizzy spell and blacked out behind the wheel of a double-decker on route 681, which then overturned near Lam Tin MTR station on Lei Yue Mun Road.

The force of the impact killed a 42-year-old woman, whose head was severed, while 20 other passengers were injured. The deceased was later identified as Chung Yee-wah.

In two separate cases, Chung's estate administrator Ho Siu-cheong and crash survivor Vicky Pang Kwok-leung on Thursday filed civil claims against the driver and the bus company for negligent driving and breach of statutory duty.

But neither of the filings, made available on Friday, revealed the sum of damages sought.

The same court also received another claim against a KMB driver, who was similarly jailed for dangerous driving after leaving a young man paralysed.

This accident took place on August 20, 2017 when Vicky Lam Shui-chee, 48, rammed his double-decker into a police car, which then hit two vehicles on Tsuen Wan Road, flinging one of the drivers over a bridge.

Lau Cheuk-yin, who was 23 at the time, was later found on top of another car parked at a construction site 14 metres below.

Subsequent medical examination found him paralysed from the waist down, due to a spinal injury.

He is now seeking an unspecified sum of damages against Lam and KMB for negligence and breach of common duty of care. Lam was jailed for 15 months last year.

All three cases are scheduled for June.
