Tanzania will employ 1,000 new medical doctors across the east African nation to boost health care services in public hospitals, the government of Tanzania announced.
DAR ES SALAAM, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- The government of Tanzania on Thursday announced the employment of 1,000 new medical doctors across the east African nation to boost health care services in public hospitals.
The employment of the new doctors was announced by President John Magufuli at the 55th Anniversary of the Medical Association of Tanzania (MAT), an association of more than 1,500 medical professionals practicing in Tanzania.
In his address televised live by the national broadcaster, Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation, Magufuli said upon employment, the 1,000 doctors should be deployed to all district and regional public health facilities across the country.
The president said between November 2015, when he took office, and January 2020, the government has employed 13,479 medical personnel in various disciplines, including specialists, nurses, dentists, radiologists and pharmacists.
"The government is working hard to improve the health sector but sometimes efforts aimed at improving the sector are constrained by insufficient financial resources," Magufuli told MAT members, development partners and senior government officials in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam.
Elisha Osati, MAT President, pledged to continue working closely with the government in solving challenges facing the health sector.
In addition, Osati said MAT, which has the mandate to promote the medical and allied sciences, maintain the honor and interests of the medical professions and uphold a high standard of medical ethics and conduct among its members, will play a front role in supporting major reforms in the health sector pioneered by President Magufuli. ■
