Sixty-five tutors from Kenya's technical, vocational education and training institutions were awarded certificates of merit Thursday after completing a ten-day Huawei-sponsored crash course on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and data communications.
NAIROBI, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Sixty-five tutors from Kenya's technical, vocational education and training (TVET) institutions were awarded certificates of merit Thursday after completing a ten-day Huawei-sponsored crash course on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and data communications.
The graduation ceremony, which took place at the Kenya School of TVET, based in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, was attended by senior government officials, Huawei executives, tutors, students and aspiring innovators.
Esther Mworia, principal secretary of the State Department for TVET in the Kenyan Ministry of Education, said Huawei's Train the Trainer program, jointly implemented by the Chinese telecoms firm and the Kenya School of TVET, has equipped participants with the advanced skills required to hasten the growth of Kenya's digital economy.
"The future of Kenya's economy depends on our ability to equip our youth with the skills necessary to thrive in a digital world," Mworia said. "Through this partnership with Huawei, we are not only creating opportunities for trainers but also ensuring that the ripple effects will benefit students, industries and communities across the country."
According to Mworia, Kenya is committed to forging robust industry-academia linkages to improve the digital skills of the youth, unlock job opportunities and improve service delivery.
The tutors, selected from 58 TVET institutions countrywide, underwent intensive training to improve their information and communication technology (ICT) skills and are expected to impart the knowledge acquired to their peers, students and the wider community. They will be tasked with establishing ICT academies within their institutions, supporting digitization of curriculum, and nurturing an army of digitally savvy learners to advance Kenya's transition to a knowledge-based economy.
Leng Yuta, director of public relations at Huawei Kenya, said that partnership with tertiary institutions is key to equipping the next generation with the skills required to propel the country toward the fourth industrial revolution.
"Looking ahead, we are eager to formalize our partnership through a memorandum of understanding with the State Department for TVET," he said. "This framework will reaffirm our shared commitment to nurturing ICT talent and empowering TVET institutions to deliver industry-aligned training."■
