Japan mines most gold on last day of Budapest Judo Grand Slam

Japan concluded the International Judo Federation (IJF) Hungary Grand Slam with 8 gold medals after taking 3 on the last competition day, on which Su Xin earned a sole bronze for China.

BUDAPEST, July 10 (Xinhua) -- Japan won three gold medals while Italy and France claimed one each on the third and final day of the International Judo Federation (IJF) Hungary Grand Slam here on Sunday.

Japanese Wakaba Tomita claimed the gold in the women's +78kg, dominating Idalys Ortiz from Cuba. Su Xin from China and Raz Hershko from Israel got the bronze.

Su's bronze medal is the best result achieved by a Chinese athlete in this Grand Slam. Another judoka from China, Xu Shiyan, finished fifth.

Sanshiro Murao from Japan, who won the Paris Grand Slam in February, was victorious again after triumphing over Italy's Christian Parlati in the men's 90kg.

Spectators witnessed another Japanese victory in the men's 100kg final, with Kentaro Iida beating Varlam Liparteliani from Georgia. Local favorite Zsombor Veg got the bronze, along with Nikoloz Sherazadishvili from Spain.

Italy's Alice Bellandi won the women's 78kg by beating Israeli rival Inbar Lanir. The two bronze medals went to Mayra Aguiar from Brazil and Shori Hamada from Japan.

In the last final of the Grand Slam, three-time Olympic champion Teddy Riner from France won the men's +100kg, beating Jelle Snippe from the Netherlands by an ippon. Magomedomar Magomedomarov from the United Arab Emirates and Shokhruh Bakhtiyorov from Uzbekistan took the bronze.

Japan topped the medal tally with eight gold, followed by Italy and Brazil, both earning one gold. Azerbaijan got fourth place while France and host Hungary shared fifth.

This year's Grand Slam in Budapest is an Olympic qualification competition. ■
