As Chow Tai Fook celebrates its 95th anniversary, the iconic Hong Kong jewellery brand is unveiling an exquisite new line that honours the house’s legacy while reimagining it for modern global audiences. To mark this milestone moment, Chow Tai Fook's creative director of high jewellery Nicholas Lieou has introduced a new creation – the Rouge Collection. Now, style icon Hilary Tsui elegantly showcases the jewellery, bringing out its sleek and sophisticated design.
Tsui is widely acclaimed for her unique and avant-garde aesthetic that skillfully combines unexpected elements. In this exclusive photographic portfolio, the renowned fashion influencer elegantly showcases a selection of pieces from the new Rouge Collection. This collection not only embodies Chow Tai Fook's pioneering legacy but also reflects its unwavering commitment to traceability, craftsmanship, quality, and innovation. The sophisticated rings, earrings, bracelets and necklaces quietly reflect the house’s history while being appropriate for everyday wear. The intention is undoubtedly to modernise Chow Tai Fook’s cultural relevance in jewellery design by incorporating modern iconography.

Lieou spent 18 months developing the line, pinpointing the particular aspects of Chinese craftsmanship—and the brand’s legacy—that he wanted to use. He delved into the brand’s extensive archives to look for design elements that could be modernised for the 21st century. “My design philosophy is quite straightforward,” Lieou says as he discusses the inspiration behind the Rouge Collection. He embraced a graphic, modern approach that blends Chinese heritage with contemporary sensibilities, one that Lieou hopes to infuse Chow Tai Fook’s pieces with going forward. “The Rouge Collection encapsulates the essence of [the brand’s] future creative direction by blending deep cultural symbolism with modern design,” he says.

This design note is evident in every piece of the Rouge Collection, which incorporates graphic lines. The collection features the Chinese character “福” (blessings), which is part of the brand name. “We reinterpreted this into a streamlined, linear graphic motif, creating a distinctive and repeatable graphic pattern that is instantly recognisable as our in-house monogram,” Lieou describes.

Many pieces in the collection are formed of squares “because traditionally during Chinese New Year, we write on a square piece of red paper”. On closer inspection, the eye picks up patterns that look like gold bricks. “It’s engraved into the gold, and where it’s ingrained, it features a sandblasted finish [to create contrast],” adds Lieou. This particular graphic also pays homage to the architectural beauty of windowsills, a symbol of protection and love between generations.

While many pieces in the Rouge Collection are pure gold, others incorporate panels of red enamel. This was a specific choice Lieou made as a further nod to Chow Tai Fook’s heritage. “The word ‘Tung’ signifies the colour red in Chinese and represents strength, confidence and fortune,” notes Lieou. Using pops of red in the collection not only reflects this important aspect of Chinese culture but also honours the brand’s founder, Dr Cheng Yu-tung, who was a driving force in building the brand’s legacy. In the decades since Chow Tai Fook’s founding, red also became the brand’s signature colour.
