Hungary's Olympic short-track skating champion Csaba Burjan has been banned for a year by his national federation after a social media post upsetting China in December.

Wednesday's statement from the Hungarian National Skating Federation's (MOKSZ) Ethics and Disciplinary Committee announced the decision on its website.

"The board found that the competitor had committed a disciplinary and ethical violation by his post published on social media on December 3," said the statement.

Burjan, who won his gold at Pyeongchang in 2018, is "banned from participating in the short-track speedskating team, national team training and training camps, and competitions on the MOKSZ racing calendar for a period of one year."

The charge relates to a since-deleted Instagram post he made while waiting for immigration at Shanghai's Pudong international airport ahead of a World Cup series event.

As well as deleting the offending post, Burjan and the federation apologised.

However, the team's Chinese coach, Zhang Ling, to whom the skater also apologised, handed in her resignation, although the federation refused it.

The Chinese coach posted on her WeChat account, saying she was "astounded and outraged by the racist comments against China made publicly by the speed skater and resigned immediately as the head coach of Hungary's short-track speedskating team".

Zhang was the coach when Burjan and his teammates won gold in the men's 5,000-metre relay at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, the first ever for the country.
