TEHRAN, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Iran did not send weapons to Russia for use in its conflict with Ukraine and will not do so in the future, the Iranian foreign minister has said.

Hossein Amir-Abdollahian made the remarks in a Thursday phone call with his Finnish counterpart Pekka Haavisto, according to a press release published by the Iranian Foreign Ministry on its website on Friday.

Iran maintains that the solution to the crisis in Ukraine should be a political one and any kind of military assistance to either of the two sides will only delay the opportunity to establish peace, he said.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry recently decided to downgrade ties with Iran and remove the Iranian ambassador's accreditation over what it called Iran's "unfriendly act" to "supply Russia with weapons to wage war against Ukraine."
