This Yuen Long Duplex Apartment Embraces a Clean Aesthetic: Straightforward, Simple, Soft and Stunning

Combining the elegance of traditional Japanese minimalism with modern influences, the "clean aesthetic" trend not only looks good but feels good. Mae Design Studio's skilled team created a stunning four-bedroom, two-living room home that beautifully captures this concept.

Marcus Chan, a designer at Mae Design Studio, tells us, "Our design inspiration comes from the "clean aesthetic" concept – straightforward, simple, light and beautiful. We tried to create a space that feels like a breath of fresh air by simplifying the design and getting rid of unnecessary details. This enabled the homeowners to fully enjoy their family time together. We also wanted to let in as much light as possible and create a beautiful, airy feel. So, we used sheer curtains to let sunlight shine through and fill the space with a soft glow. This way, shadows playfully dance around the room and create a warm, cosy atmosphere."

The homeowners want a design that is both simple and elegant, but also caters to their children's daily life needs. They also want enough storage space to keep books and miscellaneous items organised. To address this, the design team cleverly utilised the space under the stairs to create a pantry and storage area. "We like the idea of flexible modular components, using bookshelves as partition walls for the walk-in closet and integrating it into the existing structure," Marcus adds.

As for materials and colours, simple natural materials and soft tones are used. Environmentally friendly and sustainable materials such as oak, marble paint, plaster, brass and woven fabrics are all incorporated.

The living room is coated with marble paint, creating a feeling of warmth in the winter and coolness in the summer. The entire room adopts soft tones, with an organically shaped coffee table placed in front of the sofa to create a natural and peaceful atmosphere.

The master bedroom and bathroom cleverly incorporate storage cabinets, providing a designated space for clothes and miscellaneous items. Not only does this keep things looking neat and tidy, but also emits a sense of calm and gentleness.
