BEIJING, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- Here are the latest Chinese sports headlines over the past week:

1. China claimed silver at Women's Basketball World Cup

China pocketed the silver after losing to the United States 83-61 in the final of the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup 2022.

Despite the defeat, the Chinese team has already tied its best record at the quadrennial tournament. It also finished runner-up at the formerly known FIBA World Championship for Women in 1994.

Earlier this week, China cruised past Puerto Rico and Belgium and advanced to the top-eight on a group phase record of four wins and one loss. China then defeated France 85-71 in the quarterfinals and edged host Australia 61-59 by a buzzer-beater of two free throws with 3.4 seconds on the clock in the semifinal.

2. Chinese center Zhou Qi is to return to the NBL with South East Melbourne Phoenix for another year

Australia's National Basketball League announced on Tuesday that Chinese center Zhou Qi has returned to the NBL for another season with South East Melbourne Phoenix.

Zhou had an outstanding offseason performance as he averaged 15 points and 12.7 rebounds in his three appearances at the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup, plus his irreplaceable role for China in the World Cup Qualifiers.

3. Alfa Romeo F1 Team and Zhou Guanyu continue together for 2023

Zhou Guanyu, the first driver from China to race in F1, has extended his relationship with Alfa Romeo and will remain in F1 in 2023, as the team announced prior to the Singapore Grand Prix.

The 23-year-old Shanghai-born racer has scored six points so far in his rookie season.

4. China claimed four straight victories in FIVB Women's World Championship 2022

China's women's volleyball team defeated their first four group opponents in Pool D without losing a set at FIVB Women's World Championship 2022 held in Poland and Netherlands.

The Chinese team beat Argentina 3-0 in the tournament opener last Sunday to start the winning streak. The team led by outside hitter Li Yingying continued to beat Colombia, Japan and the Czech Republic with 3-0, respectively and led Pool D with four wins.

5. Chengdu holds 2022 ITTF World Team Table Tennis Championships Finals

2022 ITTF World Team Championships Finals kicked off in Chengdu, China on September 30.

The draw took place on Wednesday, and the matches commenced on Friday with the group phase. The knockout stage starts on October 5, and the women's and men's finals will take place on October 8 and 9.■
