Released in 1996, Scream refreshed the horror genre with its self-awareness, witty writing and "final girl" tropes. Our protagonist Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) was utterly compelling—she dealt with deaths, taunting, betrayal and overcoming a killer, and her bravery in the face of fear was memorable.

Equally memorable were the totally ’90s teen girl outfits—Prescott had cool and casual style, often mixing feminine items with oversized pieces, while her best friend Tatum Riley (Rose McGowan) nailed the cute and preppy look with pastel tops and miniskirts. In the films iconic opening scene, Casey Becker (Drew Barrymore) was soft and sweet in a cream get-up, but that was unfortunately stained red pretty quickly.
Although the upcoming Scream film will feature modern looks, we thought about what brands this teen trio would wear today, and these are five Asian designers with collections that resemble their respective styles:
J Kim
It’s clear that Sidney Prescott prefers a lowkey look—we suppose it’s easier for her to run away from a frenzied murderer on the loose. However, denim doesn’t need to do be boring, and that’s exactly how Korean-Russian designer J Kim feels too. Her signature jeans look like a contemporary take on Western chaps, and feature criss-crossed cut out designs for extra flair.
Shushu/Tong
This Chinese brand does a very fresh take on the preppy look—expertly tailored pastel tweed sets with mini hemlines are perfect for Tatum Riley’s taste. Their spring-summer 2022 collection took major inspiration from high school uniforms and tennis outfits, so it’s totally on brand for this teen cheerleader.

Supriya Lele
As well as pastels, Miss Riley was also a fan of bright colours, something that British-Indian designer Supriya Lele often incorporates in her designs. Instead of red, we think she’d go for a very on trend shade of coriander in a similarly low waistline, as seen in Lele’s spring-summer 2022 collection.
Peter Do
Although Casey Becker’s oversized jumper is still in style, Peter Do elevates traditional knitwear with his modern Vietnamese design sensibilities. His jumpers merge volume and structure, so while you get a cool ’90s slouchy vibe, you also get an interesting peek-a-boo shoulder or an unexpected detachable feature that allows you to wear the jumper in different ways.
Kim Shui
It wouldn't be a teen movie without a hint of floral print. This print is often used to depict youth and naivety, but we feel like these girls would appreciate an upgrade. Chinese designer Kim Shui does large floral prints, and her blown-up images give the effect of a marbled texture—far more interesting that the dainty prints seen in Scream.
