Melrose Coffee Brings California Sun to Central’s Elgin Street

Tatler Hong Kong

Opening in the middle of Hong Kong's rainy season, Melrose Coffee couldn't have brought a dose of sunny Californian optimism to the city at a better time. Named after the world-famous Los Angeles shopping street that borders Hollywood, the cafe specialises in the coffee and brunch culture of the land of milk and honey, with food and drink offerings geared towards the health-conscious and, of course, the Instagram-devoted.

The social media-friendly aesthetics begin at the door, with a rose-tinted exterior that gives way to a pastel-hued interior of pale woods, terrazzo accents, and pool chair-inspired seating—all of which are bathed in a warm glow emanating from diffused ceiling lights.

On the menu, expect Californian breakfast items across a signatures section, toasties made using sourdough, as well as requisite sweets and pastries. Highlights include royal potato rosti, 'popover' pancake, a superfood green bowl of moringa yoghurt, chia seeds, granola and goji, as well as croffle churros—the result of a three-way combination where croissant dough is cooked in a waffle iron and served in the style of the Spanish dessert.

On the caffeine front, the cafe serves coffee made using single-origin beans from Honduras, which impart tasting notes of peach and oolong. Have it black, with milk, or in the ESP Cinnamon, which mixes a shot of espresso with blended chai tea. Non-caffeinated specials include the Apple Tea Cap, which froths together Scottish red tea, milk, and housemade caramelised cinnamon apple jam.
