Ugandan military marks 39th founding anniversary

The Ugandan military on Thursday marked its 39th founding anniversary since 1981.

KAMPALA, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Ugandan military on Thursday marked its 39th founding anniversary since 1981.

President Yoweri Museveni who presided over the celebration held in the central district of Nakaseke described the Uganda People's Defense Force (UPDF) as an army from the people that is also for the people.

He said he had already experimented successfully that the army can be involved in helping the citizens uplift their family income.

"Our efforts have already produced results. Now there is surplus maize, bananas. Our only problem is now looking for market across Africa and overseas," Museveni said.

During the event, more than 100 people were given golden medals in recognition of their contribution to the development of the country.

The celebration was held under the theme "Consolidating the UPDF strategic partnership with the people to guard the gains of liberation".

The celebrations on Thursday followed a week long civil military activities include cleaning of urban centers, tree planting, engineering works and medical camps among others.
