The Balenciaga Le City bag—also known as the Motorcycle City Bag—has become an enduring icon in the world of luxury accessories. Introduced in 2001 by then-creative director Nicolas Ghesquière, this unassuming yet distinctive design almost never made it to production.

Structured and logo-heavy bags dominated the luxury bag market back then, and the Balenciaga Le City’s relaxed silhouette and understated elegance seemed risky. Met with scepticism from the French Maison’s stakeholders, a limited run of just 25 models was produced.

The turning point came when the ultimate It-girl of the 2000s, supermodel Kate Moss was spotted with the slouchy, bohemian accessory nestled in the crook of her elbow. Her endorsement catapulted Le City into the spotlight, cementing it as the must-have accessory for fashion fans overnight.

Le City’s departure from conventional luxury aesthetics set it apart from the competition.
