A standout piece from the house’s current fall/winter collection, the genderless coat is inspired by an archival outerwear style called the Ulster—a personal wardrobe mainstay of Sergio Loro Piana, the late vice president of the eponymous family company. Sergio was known for his sophisticated, understated style that eschewed flash-in-the-pan trends in favour of quality, functionality and comfort—and the beautifully tailored winter coat he wore on high rotation was the ultimate case in point.
The contemporary iteration of the overcoat is reworked in baby cashmere, a material unmatched in softness and one of the rarest in the world. It took Sergio and Pier Luigi Loro Piana ten years to convince Mongolian herders to set aside just 30 grams of under fleece from baby goats, from which this fine fabric is made, using a delicate, meticulous combing process.

The double-breasted silhouette showcases the relaxed tailoring while keeping the original’s sartorial heritage firmly intact, including broad lapels, placket pockets and a comfort-enhancing half-belt, which is hidden under the two deep back pleats. The coat’s three colour options play into its timeless codes beautifully, with shades of dark claret, desert mist and navy blue.
The Sergio Loro Piana Coat sits within both Loro Piana’s fall/winter 2022 womenswear and menswear collections. The women’s range celebrates fabrics that fuse luxury with comfort while channelling a refined explorer spirit—think silky satin, alpaca-blended cashmere, flurry shearling and buttery leather, on offerings such as reversible jackets and rain boots.
Meanwhile, the men’s collection draws upon the great outdoors through key pieces such as a hooded, heat-sealed wool parka, organic cotton five-pocket trousers and performance-driven sneakers. The polished yet utilitarian style is supported by a seasonal range of warm, dusky shades and touches of reinvigorated colour.
