If you’re looking for inspiration for your next travel destination, there is an unlikely source you’ve probably not even thought about: fashion designers. It makes sense, designers are always on the lookout for inspiration for their next collection and adventures are full of opportunities that spark inspiration. In fact, many designer brands have been built on their founders’ insatiable wanderlust or the love they have for the place they call home. From the most secluded coves are in Turkey to the most untouched beaches in Thailand, fashion designers have been inspired by some of the world's most beautiful locations.
In our four-part series Destination by Design 2024, these globe-trotting designers spill their best-kept travel secrets to Tatler and tell us how these destinations have formed the basis of their collections. In the second part, we talk to Isabella Espinosa, the founder and creative mind behind the cult beachwear label Baobab about humpback whale watching in Colombia and showing her recent collection in Madagascar’s Baobab Tree Valley.

A former lawyer, Espinosa began Baobab in 2017 and has since seen the brand’s popularity skyrocket, thanks to all the ‘It’ girls who have taken to the label’s sunset dresses and cut-out swimsuits. Sustainability is also at the heart of Baobab—part of all proceeds goes towards restoring the San Andrés Coral Reef in San Andrés, Colombia—so it’s no wonder that Espinosa’s aesthetic pays homage to the lush landscape of her home country, as well as the most biodiverse destinations in the world. Read on to see how the lush jungles of Colombia have inspired her latest pieces.

What are some of your favourite places to holiday in Colombia and why?Nestled in the lush landscapes of Colombia’s Chocó department you’ll find Nuquí, a pristine paradise, perfect for ecotourism.
In Nuquí, the jungle meets the vast ocean, creating a breathtaking backdrop for whale watching. During specific seasons, the majestic humpback whales migrate through the warm Pacific waters. This extraordinary experience allows you to see nature’s beauty up close.
Beyond the whales, Nuquí is a haven for biodiversity. The area’s untouched natural beauty and vibrant ecosystems make it a sanctuary for wildlife enthusiasts and eco-adventurers alike. Whether you are exploring the verdant rainforest or relaxing on the pristine beaches, Nuquí promises an unforgettable escape into nature’s wonders.
Can you share a memorable moment from one of those trips? In 2021, during the pandemic, I had the opportunity to visit Nuquí. It was like a breath of fresh air from the confinement we had all been experiencing. The trip was filled with magical moments like seeing the whales up close, feeling the vastness of the ocean, and being surrounded by untouched nature. The disconnection from the world and immersion in such a pristine environment was unforgettable. The tranquillity and beauty of Nuquí provided a much-needed escape and left a lasting impression on me.
When is the best time to go?The best time to visit Nuquí is in June, which marks the beginning of the whale-watching season. During this period, humpback whales migrate to the warm Pacific waters, offering visitors a unique opportunity to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. The season typically extends until October, providing ample time to plan a trip and experience the magic of whale watching.

What are some unmissable things to do and see and eat from that place? When visiting Nuquí, there are several unmissable activities and experiences:
- Whale-watching tours: Embark on a tour to witness the majestic humpback whales as they migrate through the Pacific waters. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you shouldn’t miss.
- Explore the jungle: Take guided tours through the lush rainforest surrounding Nuquí. Discover the rich biodiversity, including exotic plants and wildlife, and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.
- Local cuisine: Indulge in local food sourced directly from the region. Fresh seafood is a highlight, with dishes like ceviche and grilled fish offering a taste of the Pacific. The local culinary scene also includes traditional Colombian flavours and ingredients.
What are the places that inspired the birth of your brand? The majestic tides, irregular shapes etched into the sand by the ocean’s gentle caress and the intricate textures woven into its landscapes deeply influence the essence of our brand. These natural elements evoke a sense of raw beauty and authenticity that resonates with us. The diversity of landscapes, textures and atmospheres found in different places around the world fuels our creativity. That’s why our runways showcase a fusion of influences from various corners of the globe. Whether it’s the rugged coastlines of Colombia, the lush rainforests of the Amazon rainforest, the desert in Dubai or the vibrant city streets of New York, each locale brings its unique energy and aesthetic to our designs. By incorporating elements from these diverse landscapes, we aim to capture the essence of global beauty and create collections that are both timeless and transcendent.

How have some of these places inspired recent pieces in your collections? The coastal region of Colombia, where the ocean merges seamlessly with the lush jungle, serves as an inspiration for our designs. Our HS24 Selva Adentro collection draws its essence from this mystical confluence of nature. Our homage to Colombia’s magical landscapes manifests in vibrant hues and captivating contrasts.
Among our signature pieces are the Magia Salvaje Dress and the Ari Dress Arboreal, meticulously crafted to mirror the captivating colours and patterns found in the Colombian flora and fauna.
The Lia Dress, the Palomonio Dress and other pieces adorned with intricate beaded details are inspired by the asymmetrical shapes of nature, infusing each garment with a touch of magic.

If you could only pack a carry-on to these places, what would you bring? When it comes to packing essentials, versatility is key. One staple that always finds its place in my carry-on is the versatile Baobab piece from our collection. Its adaptability allows me to effortlessly transition between different occasions and settings, whether it’s a casual daytime exploration or an elegant evening affair. From beach to bar or even a wedding, I always make sure I bring a Baobab piece that can work for any occasion.
From our HS24 collection, I would travel with the Galo Bikini and Nia Skirt because they offer unparalleled versatility and comfort. The Nia Skirt can be worn as a cover-up or effortlessly draped over the bikini. The bikini is equally versatile, pairing seamlessly with a white overshirt for a chic look or standing out on its own as a statement piece.
The Cloud Pants are the ultimate wardrobe staple for versatility and comfort. Their relaxed, flowy fit allows for effortless styling that can be dressed up or down.
The Ari Mini Dress epitomises elegance with its timeless silhouette and vibrant colours, yet its versatility allows for effortless styling that can be dressed down for any occasion. Whether you choose to pair it with sandals and a sun hat for a casual day out or elevate it with statement jewellery and heels for a special evening event, the Ari dress effortlessly transitions between looks while maintaining its colourful and comfortable charm.
Are you travelling anywhere new this year? I am looking forward to visiting the Baobab Tree Valley in Madagascar this year. It holds a special significance for our brand, as it is the very roots from which Baobab was inspired.
The baobab tree is a symbol of resilience and strength, qualities that resonate deeply with our brand ethos. These ancient trees, with their distinctive silhouettes and storied history, serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of staying grounded and connected to our roots. Launching our HS24 collection in Madagascar allows us to pay homage to this extraordinary place while also showcasing the beauty of our collection.
