Bulgari’s Octo Finissimo Ultra broke records earlier this year by becoming the slimmest watch in the world. Though its record was broken a few months later, the Italian brand remains ever-diligent in its quest for technical excellence. We sat down with Bulgari CEO Jean-Christophe Babin to know his thoughts on the maison’s strategies and the technical marvels that will drive the brand’s conversation in the future.

According to you, what will be the biggest trends in the watch industry in the next five years?

In the post-Covid-19 world, crafting [impeccable] products is not enough; you also have to be a genuinely ethical and caring company while being [an expert in your field]. There was a thrust towards this before, but Covid has certainly accelerated this trend. By 2023, millennials and Gen Z will represent 60 per cent of luxury [buyers], and these values will be even more relevant.

What timepieces did Bulgari unveil at Geneva Watch Days 2022?

This year, we have added gold editions to the Octo Finissimo collection to celebrate its tenth anniversary. The highlight of the show was the Octo Finissimo Skeleton 8 Days, an amazing skeleton watch with manual winding. Eight is a lucky number for us as we have eight consecutive world records for this collection. The small seconds hand with its extended bar indicating the power reserve is a fine detail and, overall, it is a refined men’s watch. We have redesigned the movement to host a large barrel and reinvented the skeleton to become extremely graphic and geometric to match the watch case.

Will Bulgari continue to focus on slim watches in future or explore other technical aspects?

The Octo has become an icon in the last ten years. When I look ahead, [say] ten to 20 years, it will be much bigger [in terms of brand and popularity]. We will continue to fine-tune the Octo’s design that is inspired by vintage Roman buildings and hone its sleek elegance by playing with shape, thickness and functionality to fit the lifestyle of gentlemen in the coming decades.

Which Bulgari watches are the most popular in the Chinese market?

In China, Serpenti is quite sought-after among women’s watches. The latest timepiece in the Serpenti Tourbillon High Jewellery collection has the smallest tourbillon in the world. Meanwhile, the complication is designed and crafted in our workshop in Switzerland’s Jura mountains. The diamond-embellished watch, with a black spinel on the bezel and bracelet, is visually attractive with its contrasting colours and will appeal to younger people with a penchant for luxury.
