Nationwide intangible cultural heritage promotion initiative launched in Beijing

BEIJING, June 8 (Xinhua) -- As part of the celebrations for this year's Cultural and Natural Heritage Day which falls on Saturday, China has launched a nationwide initiative to promote and showcase its intangible cultural heritage.

The inauguration ceremony of the initiative was held at the China Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum (CICHM) in Beijing on Friday. Five intangible cultural heritage inheritors donated their works to the museum.

Across the country, more than 12,000 intangible cultural heritage promotion and exhibition events are planned to commemorate the Cultural and Natural Heritage Day, including a year-long exhibition at the CICHM.

The exhibition, which opened on Friday, features over 100 national intangible cultural heritage projects and items listed on UNESCO's intangible heritage lists, including local opera materials as well as crafts such as embroidery and wood-carving.

Showcased through multimedia channels, over 600 pieces including exhibit sets are on display at the museum, highlighting the vitality of intangible cultural heritage in contemporary society.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of China joining UNESCO's Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. ■
