As the New Year celebrations continue, culinary director Richard Ekkebus and executive pastry chef Carles Codina of The Landmark Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong, proudly present the Galette des Rois—an iconic French pastry and centrepiece of the LMO Freshly Baked Series. Known as the “cake of kings,” this much-loved treat pays homage to a 14th-century tradition celebrated on January 6 or the first Sunday after New Year’s Day, marking the Epiphany holiday in France.

A Family Tradition

The holiday of Epiphany, marking the visit of the three Wise Men to baby Jesus on the 12th night after Christmas, brings with it a delightful French tradition: the Galette des Rois. This celebratory pastry is tied to themes of royalty, with a hidden fève—a small trinket—tucked into the cake. The lucky diner who finds the fève is crowned King or Queen for the day, adding a playful charm to the occasion.

With a blend of culinary sophistication and heartfelt nostalgia, their creation invites “FANs” of The Landmark Mandarin Oriental to partake in this cherished celebration, steeped in French heritage and family memories.

Who’s the King or Queen?

LMO Freshly Baked unveils an irresistible French classic to ring in the new year with style. The Galette des Rois, crafted with the finest ingredients, takes on new life with French A.O.P. butter, celebrated for its rich, nutty flavours. Encasing a luxurious almond and bourbon vanilla frangipane, the pastry is baked to a deep golden perfection, offering a feast for both the eyes and the palate.
