Changes in ocean temperatures have affected our fish stocks with potential long-term consequences for our livelihoods, ecosystems, and tourism.
UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- With the recognition and the urgency for profound global transformation as the core of the Pact for the Future which was passed on Sunday at the Summit of the Future of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the world body's member states strive to rebuild trust in multilateralism with a legitimate demand to be recognized as equal partners, President of Namibia Nangolo Mbumba told the UNGA General Debate on Wednesday.
Such partners mean those who can be trusted, who are in the fight against war, poverty, global injustice and inequality, the president said.
The theme for this General Debate -- "Leaving no one behind: acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations" -- "aligns perfectly with our shared aspirations for effective international cooperation," he noted.
Namibia is particularly concerned about the impact of climate change, according to the president. "Changes in ocean temperatures have affected our fish stocks with potential long-term consequences for our livelihoods, ecosystems, and tourism."
"Namibia is working to develop a sustainable energy mix to support its ambitious industrialization agenda and to contribute to the world's efforts to combat climate change," he said. "We are establishing green industrialization ecosystems, for decarbonizing industries that find it difficult to lower their greenhouse emissions."
"In conclusion, Namibia is a child of international solidarity, midwifed by the United Nations, and therefore remains its firm proponent. The United Nations system can be strengthened if we hold hands and work together as bridge builders as illustrated by the Summit of the Future," he added. ■
