BEIJING, April 6 (Xinhua) -- Here are the latest Chinese sports headlines from the past week:
1. WTA1000 Wuhan Open to return in October
The Wuhan Open, one of the 10 WTA1000 tournaments worldwide, is set to return to Wuhan for the first time since 2019, organizers said on April 3.
The tournament will be held from October 7 to 13 at the Optics Valley International Tennis Center, which features a retractable roof center court and can have more than 13,000 spectators.
2. CBA dream came true for grassroots player Yi
Beijing Royal Fighters' draft-signed Yi Jinhong debuted in a professional basketball league in his team's CBA regular season game against the Jilin Northeast Tigers on April 2.
Yi, 31, scored five points in his seven-minute appearance, including a one-handed jam and a 3-pointer.
"Today I came here, standing for all the grassroots players," Yi said after the game, "I really hope I can inspire them with a never-say-die spirit."
3. China dominated opening day at Artistic Swimming World Cup
Chinese artistic swimmers claimed three out of the four gold medals on offer as the first leg of the World Aquatics Artistic Swimming World Cup 2024 kicked off at the National Aquatics Center in Beijing on April 5.
China's 18-year-old Xu Huiyan triumphed in the women's solo technical with 244.9183 points and also pocketed the team technical title with her teammates. In the mixed duet technical event, China's young pair Ji Heyue and Guo Muye clinched the gold.
4. China's Luo and Hou broke world records at IWF World Cup
Luo Shifang of China claimed her first world record at the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Cup in Phuket, Thailand on April 3 in the women's 59kg category.
Luo lifted 108kg in the snatch and 140kg in the clean and jerk for a total of 248kg, beating the previous world record by one kilogram.
Luo's compatriot Hou Zhihui broke the world record for the snatch in the women's 49kg category with a lift of 97kg. She finished second overall in the women's 49kg.
5. Chinese paddlers swept titles at WTT Champions Incheon
China swept both women's and men's singles titles at WTT Champions Incheon as Sun Yingsha and Liang Jingkun were crowned on March 31.
World No. 1 Sun harvested a straight-set victory of 4-0 in the final showdown against her compatriot Wang Manyu.
In the men's final against world No. 8 Hugo Calderano, second seed Liang won the first game 11-6, lost the second 6-11 before he swept three games in a row (11-8, 11-7, 11-5) to take home the crown. Calderano eliminated world No. 1 Fan Zhendong 4-2 in the semifinals.
