In a daily briefing held Wednesday in Geneva, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged all countries to share disaggregated data and detailed line lists, so that WHO could provide appropriate public health guidance.

Tedros stressed that the current goal of every country in the world is to try to contain the virus. "We are in a fight that can be won if we do the right things."

According to him, "every country needs to be ready to detect cases early, to isolate patients, trace contacts, provide quality clinical care, prevent hospital outbreaks, and prevent community transmission."

Countries should prioritize protecting health workers, engage communities to protect most vulnerable people, and try to contain epidemics in countries with the capacity, according to Tedros.

"For the moment, we are not witnessing sustained and intensive community transmission of this virus, and we are not witnessing large-scale severe disease or death," he said.

Six special envoys were appointed by WHO on COVID-19 to provide strategic advice and high-level political advocacy and engagement in different parts of the world, while operational planning guidelines were also made by the organization to support country preparedness and response.■
