Diwali is India's major festival of the year, an opportunity to spruce up the home, buy new clothes, and, of course, enjoy parties, feasting and an exchange of gifts. The festival falls on Nov. 12 this year.

Ayodhya city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh lit over 2.2 million earthen oil lamps during Deepotsav celebrations on the eve of Diwali, setting a new Guinness World Record for lighting lamps in such a large number.
