The Hong Kong Observatory on Saturday afternoon issued the typhoon signal No 1 as tropical cyclone Bailu came within a radius of 800 kilometres of the city.
The Guangdong region, including Hong Kong, experienced very hot weather under the influence of the tropical cyclone, with temperatures in the city rising to 33 degrees Celsius at noon.

Meanwhile, visibility in the harbour fell to around 3,000 metres as the city was blanketed in haze, with the air quality health index reaching a "very high" health risk level, the second-highest on the city's five-point scale.
