Originally launched in 1973, the Cornaro sofa by Venetian architect Carlo Scarpa quickly became a design icon for its unique blend of geometric precision and plush comfort. The delightful mix of a sculptural wooden frame cradling soft, upholstered cushions creates a stunning contrast that is both visually striking and supremely cozy. Its base, available in either beech with a glossy lacquer finish or ash with a matte open-pore lacquer finish, comes in a curated selection of colorways tailored to each type of wood.
Retaining its quintessential 1970s aesthetic, the updated Cornaro isn’t just a blast from the past—it’s a refined homage to its original charm with enhanced comfort. Cassina has worked closely with Tobia Scarpa to introduce new proportions, offering increased height and depth with larger, more comfortable seating to meet the needs of today’s generation. The revival also features exposed thin black saddle leather laces, secured by specially developed grommets, designed to better connect the backrest to the structure for maximum
visual appeal.
Sustainability is also a priority, achieved through innovative materials. The cushions, for instance, are filled with recycled PET fiber as standard, along with polyurethane elements that include a percentage of bio-based polyols and CIRCULARREFOAM®—a polyurethane featuring recycled polyols. In line with circular economy principles, the new Cornaro is designed without glued parts and is fully disassemblable so that the components can be easily recycled at the end of its life cycle.
