RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazil on Sunday said its nationwide tally of confirmed COVID-19 cases reached 514,84 after 16,409 people tested positive in the past 24 hours, while the death toll neared 30,000.

The death toll rose to 29,314 after 480 deaths had been reported since Saturday, while another 4,208 deaths are still being investigated for any linkage with COVID-19, the Ministry of Health said.

MUMBAI -- Mumbai will remain under lockdown till June 30 following extension of restrictions by India's western state of Maharashtra on Sunday amid relaxations as part of its phased unlocking plan.

Maharashtra is the worst affected Indian state with over 65,000 positive COVID-19 cases while its political capital Mumbai tops the list among cities in India with some 38,000 cases so far.

CAIRO -- China on Sunday extended its help to Jordan and Sudan in their fight against the novel coronavirus, as the pandemic is still raging in the Middle East.

Jordan and China on Sunday signed an agreement under which China donated a batch of medical supplies to the kingdom to help combat the coronavirus.

Also on Sunday, Chinese medical experts in Sudan held a video conference over the prevention of COVID-19.

SANTIAGO -- Chile on Sunday reported 99,688 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 1,054 deaths from the disease.

In the past 24 hours ending 9 p.m. Saturday, 4,830 new cases were detected and 57 more patients died, the highest number of fatalities in a single day so far.

Of the new cases of infection, 4,437 presented symptoms and 393 were asymptomatic.

CAIRO -- Egypt reported on Sunday a new record of 1,536 COVID-19 daily infections, raising the total number of cases registered in the country to 24,985, the Egyptian Health Ministry said.

It is the fourth consecutive day for Egypt's COVID-19 daily infections to surpass 1,000.

TEHRAN -- Iran and Turkmenistan have agreed to reopen borders on June 10 as the restrictions pertaining to the novel coronavirus are eased in both countries recently, Iranian ambassador to Ashgabat announced on Sunday.

The rail and road borders between the two countries will reopen under strict monitoring of health protocols, Gholamabbas Arbab Khales told official IRNA news agency.

LONDON -- Another 113 COVID-19 patients have died in Britain as of Saturday afternoon, bringing the total coronavirus-related death toll in the country to 38,489, British Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government Robert Jenrick said Sunday.

The figures include deaths in all settings, including hospitals, care homes and the wider community.

DHAKA -- Offices, businesses and transports resumed in Bangladesh Sunday on a limited scale after being suspended for over two months following the COVID-19 outbreak.

On Sunday morning in capital Dhaka, train stations and ferry terminals were a bit crowded as people began returning to the city.

RIYADH -- Saudi Arabia registered on Sunday 1,877 new coronavirus cases, increasing the total infections to 85,261.

The kingdom's death toll reached 503 after reporting 23 new fatalities.

ROME -- Italy recorded 355 new coronavirus infections over the last day, the second-lowest figure since early March and a welcome dose of good news as the country gears up to further ease lockdown measures this week, according to the Ministry of Health on Sunday.

Italy has now recorded fewer than 600 new cases per day for eight consecutive days, a dramatic drop from peaks of more than 6,000 new infections a day when Italy was the epicenter of the pandemic in late March.■
