Breaking: Multiple victims confirmed in school shooting in U.S. state of Iowa

Police confirmed there were multiple victims. Earlier news reports said at least one person was killed and two others injured in the shooting.

CHICAGO, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- A shooting that happened at a high school in Perry Town, U.S. state of Iowa, on Thursday left multiple victims, local authorities said.

Speaking at a news conference Thursday morning, Dallas County Sheriff Adam Infante said local authorities were called to Perry High School at 7:37 a.m. Thursday local time on the report of shooting. He confirmed there were multiple victims but declined to provide further information.

Infante said there is no further danger to the public.

Earlier news reports said at least one person was killed and two others injured in the shooting.

Thursday was the first day back to school for Perry students after the winter break, and the shooting happened before the school day began, local media reported. Several nearby school districts have taken security precautions after the shooting.

Perry, a town with a population of about 8,000 in Dallas County, is located nearly 40 miles (about 64 km) northwest of Des Moines, the capital city of Iowa. ■
