Police said they received reports at 3.20pm of the incident. The item was found near Platform 3 of the East Rail Line stop, which is linked to a border checkpoint with Shenzhen in mainland China.

Details on the object were unclear. As of 6pm on Sunday, services along the affected stretch have not resumed.

The MTR Corporation said trains between Hung Hom and Sheung Shui would operate at six-minute intervals, and those from Hung Hom to Lok Ma Chau at 12-minute intervals.

Protesters disrupt MTR services, declare 'dawn of anti-epidemic' strikes

A free MTR shuttle bus service is running between Sheung Shui station and Lo Wu station.

This is the second time in a week that East Rail Line services have been disrupted. On January 29, an object on fire was thrown onto the tracks near University station at about 7am by protesters, while some other items were also found in Fanling and Sheung Shui.

Earlier, protesters had promised a "dawn of anti-epidemic" action if the government did not heed calls to close all borders with the mainland amid the coronavirus outbreak.

It was not clear if the latest incident was related to this.
