Chinese shares close higher Friday

BEIJING, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Friday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.18 percent to 3,241.82 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.6 percent higher at 10,161.32 points.

The combined turnover covered by the two indices stood at 1.15 trillion yuan (about 160 billion U.S. dollars), down from 1.27 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.

Stocks related to the ceramics, aircraft manufacturing and electronic device sectors led the gains, while the printing and packaging industry experienced a significant decline.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.78 percent to close at 2,067.27 points. ■
