PGA’s Clearwater Bay Open latest sporting event to be cancelled because of Hong Kong protests

Hongkongers can now add one of the region's most notable golfing events to the growing list of sporting competitions cancelled because of the ongoing protests in the city.

On Thursday, the Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club issued a short statement revealing it is cancelling the 2019 edition, which was to take place from October 17-20.

The statement said that after a lengthy discussion with the PGA Tour, the club reluctantly agreed to cancel this year's competition "due to the ongoing situation of unrest that continues in Hong Kong".

The statement noted that, from an operational and safety perspective, it would not be feasible to host the PGA Tour Series " China event to the same level that is has in the past.

The club also said it is now looking to host the event in May 2020.

The Clearwater Bay Open is the latest sporting event to be cancelled because of the ongoing civil unrest in Hong Kong.

The growing list of cancellations includes Wednesday night's racing at Happy Valley, the Hong Kong Tennis Open, the Hong Kong ASTC Sprint Triathlon Asian Cup and the Asian Aquathlon Championships.

The annual fireworks display held at Victoria Harbour to mark National Day, which was planned for October 1, has also been cancelled.
