BRUSSELS, April 5 (Xinhua) -- The following are the latest developments of the COVID-19 pandemic in European countries.

ROME -- Italy registered 525 coronavirus deaths over the past 24 hours, the lowest one-day total since March 19, health officials said Sunday.

The country registered its one-day high of 969 fatalities on March 27. The death toll has decreased in five of nine days since then.

Still, the coronavirus pandemic that claimed its first life in Italy on Feb. 20 has now resulted in a total of 15,887 deaths, more than in any other country based on official figures.

MADRID -- The number of new cases of the coronavirus infection and new deaths continued to fall in Spain, according to the daily data published by the Spanish Ministry for Health, Consumer Affairs and Social Services on Sunday.

A total of 6,023 new infections were registered between Saturday and Sunday, fewer than the 7,026 new cases in the previous 24 hours and 7,472 between Thursday and Friday, bringing the country's total infection cases to 130,759.

Meanwhile, the number of patients who have now recovered from COVID-19 increased by 3,861 to 38,080 on Sunday.

PARIS -- France has registered a total of 8,078 deaths caused by the COVID-19 since the outbreak of the epidemic, the Health Ministry announced on Sunday.

The disease claimed 357 lives in hospital in last 24 hours, taking the toll in hospital to 5,889. In addition, the counting by elderly nursing homes across the country found that there were 2,189 deaths since March 1, the ministry said in a press release.

BRUSSELS -- For the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in Belgium, the daily number of people cured overtook that of people hospitalized, health authority confirmed Sunday.

The public health institute Sciensano, in charge of monitoring and analyzing the COVID-19 data, reported that in the past 24 hours, 499 COVID-19 patients have been hospitalized while 504 people have left the hospital.

Belgium has recorded 1,260 new cases in the last 24 hours, pushing the total to 19,691 with 1,447 deaths, the Sciensano said.

LONDON, April 5 (Xinhua) -- A total of 47,806 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in Britain as of Sunday morning, a significant increase of 5,903 in the past 24 hours, according to the Department of Health and Social Care.

As of Saturday afternoon, of those hospitalised who tested positive for the novel coronavirus, 4,934 have died, according to the department.

As infections and deaths continue to rise in the country, the British government has been repeatedly urging local people to stick to the rules of "social distancing".

ATHENS -- Greek authorities registered 62 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, bringing the country's total confirmed cases to 1,735, Greek Health Ministry spokesman for the novel coronavirus epidemic Sotirios Tsiodras announced on Sunday.

Five victims have died since Saturday, bringing the total of fatalities to 73 so far. And 93 were currently intubated in intensive care units, while a total of 25,453 COVID-19 diagnostic tests have been carried out in Greece, according to an e-mailed ministry press statement.

Among the new infections on Sunday was a 53-year-old Afghan man living with his family in Malakasa reception center near Athens, according to a press release issued by the Migration and Asylum Ministry.

THE HAGUE -- The daily number of confirmed COVID-19 cases admitted to hospital in the Netherlands as well as the new deaths was decreasing, the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) announced on Sunday.

The total number of confirmed cases who are or were admitted to hospital grew by 253 in the past 24 hours to 6,875, the lowest daily figure in two weeks.

The number of reported daily deaths was 115, bringing the total to 1,766 in the country. The last time this daily number was that low was last Monday, when the death toll was 93.

FRANKFURT -- The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Germany climbed to 91,714 as of 0:00 local time on Sunday, with a death toll of 1,342, according to data from Robert Koch Institute, the country's disease control authority. ■
