Iconic bridal details get a whimsical update, with billowing statement sleeves, vivid floral prints, and tiered dresses

1/5 Statement sleeves

Clearly, off-the-shoulder bridal gowns are here to stay, but designers are giving this tried-and-tested look a new lease of life each season.

Bridal houses are turning their attention to statement sleeves—from '70s-inspired flutter sleeves to '80s-style voluminous puffy sleeves as seen at Rime Arodaky, Vera Wang, and Lela Rose.

2/5 Pretty in pink

While spring 2020 was all about the blues, fall 2020 warms up to dusty pink shades that are romantic but not too sweet. Ines di Santo and Monique Lhuillier gave their blush dresses the dramatic treatment with layers of ruffled tulle, while Zac Posen mixed up different shades of pink to create an ethereal Grecian gown for White One.

3/5 Secret garden

While floral embellishments are nothing new for a bridal look, fall 2020 steers away from overdone lace florals, making way instead for more colourful, garden-inspired designs.

Think whimsical blooms painted in watercolour, wallpaper-inspired floral prints, and 3D appliques that flutter with movement. Monique Lhuillier and Ines di Santo incorporated butterflies into their works, while Laure de Sagazan, Marchesa and Jenny Yoo flaunted oversized floral earrings.

4/5 Ruffled and tiered

The prairie dress trend from the streets and runway makes its way down the aisle with a modern take on ruffles. Though it is voluminous, this look is more lively and relaxed in contrast to the princess ball gown.

Viktor & Rolf Mariage’s version is a dramatic taffeta gown in petticoat style, while Amsale’s sleeveless tiered dress is classic and elegant.

5/5 Wearing the pants

Whether it’s a jumpsuit or pantsuit, trousers are quickly becoming staples in every bridal collection, and we can see why. Flattering and comfortable, it’s a fashion piece that will last long after the wedding. Fall 2020 sees lace, 3D embellishments and crystal beading dressing up the look.

Sahroo’s signature separates are a nod towards sustainability with biodegradable silk fabrics and recyclable glass crystals, while Lela Rose’s trouser look features a whimsical, oversized bow for a feminine touch.
