The use of natural wood veneer, metal, stone, mineral paint, and other materials, has resulted in a home with a colour scheme that evokes deep emotions and a "hidden light in darkness" ambiance.

This 1,200 square foot residence in Taoyuan, Taiwan, by designer Qiu Zhenyu, of UDé Interior Design, has skillfully combined textures such as natural wood veneer, metal, glass, mineral paint, and other materials, to create a cohesive theme of a dark-toned home that is both visually striking and diverse in texture.

The use of deep rich tones in this home evokes emotional depth and intricate storytelling through the artful layering of materials.

The spacious dining room serves as the main space of the unit, where the designer has divided the room into distinct areas for different functions using large materials.

In the living room, the casual, yet sophisticated stone texture extends elegantly from wall to ceiling. Soft golden light filters down from the opening in the ceiling, casting a luminous glow that accentuates the intricate patterns and textures of the stone.

The ebony stone wall behind the sofa resonates harmoniously with the sleek metallic surface of the television cabinet. The graceful curve of the wooden ceiling elegantly flows into the dining room, connecting the two spaces.

The dining room and kitchen are separated by glass sliding doors that not only makes the space appear bigger, but also effectively isolates the fumes without traces. The dining room and kitchen are divided by glass sliding doors, giving the impression of a larger space while effectively containing cooking odours.

"The clients we worked with are a family of four. The entire design concept was based on the parents' love for their kids and the strong connection they all have,” the designer says.

“Using the circle as a symbol, the design uses a dim yellow light to create this soft glow that resembles the bright moon rising from the sea. It represents the quiet, unconditional love a mother has for her children."

The dark colour theme is carried throughout each room design, utilising straight wooden wall panels for spatial manipulation. In the master bedroom, the bathroom is cleverly hidden behind wooden wall panels. Completing the cohesive spatial design are slender bedside lamps and straight grain textures on the back wall.

The wooden wall panel design continues into the son's room, creating a fun and cohesive flow. In the daughter's room, the semi-circular mirror cabinet mirrors the circular moon motif from the living room, symbolising a gradual and fluid change in the space akin to a lunar eclipse. The designer has opted for minimal decoration, relying on materials to craft a deep and luminous space.
