Chinese shares close higher Wednesday

BEIJING, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.02 percent to 3,158.54 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.12 percent higher at 9,693.05 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices reached 831.3 billion yuan (about 116.96 billion U.S. dollars), down from 1.25 trillion yuan recorded on the previous trading day.

Shares related to real estate and education were among the biggest gainers, while those related to nonferrous metals and finished automobiles suffered major losses.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.88 percent to close at 1,877.93 points on Wednesday. ■
