We round up the Hong Kong beaches that have the best water gradings in the city

The Environmental Protection Department regularly assesses the beaches in the city according to bacterial count, ranking Hong Kong beaches from very poor to good. For those planning a beach day, or if you are in dire need to escape the city for a little getaway, make your way to these beaches in Hong Kong that have been graded as having the best water quality.

Cheung Sha Beach

On the outskirts of Lantau Island is the longest beach in the city, Cheung Cha Beach. Stretching on for miles on end, the area is usually quite secluded with little to no people. Grab your surfboard and prepare for some intense watersports action, or just sit back on the fine golden sand and watch as the neighbouring cows forage around.

How to get there: Take the ferry from Central Pier 6 to Mui Wo, then take bus 1 or 2 to Cheung Sha Beach.

Tung Wan Beach & Kwun Yam Beach, Cheung Chau

On Cheung Chau island, around a 30 minute ferry from Central Pier (depending on whether you take the standard or express ferry) lies the beautiful Tung Wan Beach and Kwun Yam Beach. Though small in size, the two beaches are a family-friendly option and a local favourite because of their close proximity to the city and their picturesque landscape.

How to get there: Take the ferry from Central Pier 5 to Cheung Chau Island, then take a short five-minute walk down to either Tung Wan Beach or Kwun Yam Beach.

Trio Beach

Tucked away in Sai Kung, Trio Beach is a small beach surrounded by nothing but trees and greenery. It’s clear blue waters and soft sand makes for an appealing getaway destination for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city. With clear views of Shelter Island and Clearwater Bay what more could one ask for?

How to get there: Take a Sampan from Pak Sha Wan Pier to Trio Beach

Hung Shung Yeh Beach & Lo So Shing Beach

Just a short trip from the city, Lamma island is considered one of the best places to go when it comes to fresh seafood. If you're planning a trip, be sure to also head down to Lamma's iconic beaches; Hung Sung Yeh Beach and Lo So Shing Beach, both a short walk up along the Family Trail hike. Its' clean waters and powdery yellow sand is a favourite among locals and families.

How to get there: Take a ferry from Central Pier 4 to Yung Shue Wan. Take the Family Trail hike down to Hung Sung Yeh Beach or Lo So Shing Beach.

Middle Bay Beach

True to its name, this beach lies right in the middle of South Bay and Repulse Bay. Though smaller than its’ neighbours, Middle Bay Beach does offer a barbecue site for those looking to enjoy a good grill with family or friends. Comparable to the crystal-clear blue waters and fine sand of popular beach spot in Repulse Bay, Middle Bay Beach makes for a quieter and less populated option.   

How to get there: Take Bus 6, 6A, 6X, 66 or 260 from Exchange Square Bus Terminus to Repulse Bay, then either walk or taxi down to Middle Bay Beach.  

South Bay Beach

Situated between Stanley and Repulse Bay is South Bay Beach, one of the less frequented beaches in Southside. With direct views to Ocean Park, the picturesque beach makes for a great place for a relaxing afternoon to swim and sit back and enjoy the stunning scenery.  

How to get there: Take Bus 6, 6A, 6X, 66 or 260 from Exchange Square Bus Terminus to Repulse Bay, then either walk or taxi to South Bay Beach.

Stanley Main Beach

With access to a fast food kiosk, barbeque pits, cafes, restaurants and bars, and one of the coolest weekend markets, Stanley Main Beach is usually packed with locals and tourists. As one of the more popular beaches in Hong Kong, you’ll be able to see numerous families enjoying their day out in the sun here.

How to get there: Take Bus 6, 6A, 6X, 66 or 260 from Exchange Square Bus Terminus to Stanley Main Beach

Shek O Beach

After hiking Dragon Backs, make your way down to Shek O Beach, where you will find clean fine white sands and beautiful blue waters. The beach offers scenic views of Island Bay and Ng Fan Chau island. Well-equipped with beachside cafes, the destination is popular among surfers and swimmers alike.

How to get there: Take Bus 9 from Shau Kei Wan to Shek O Beach

Repulse Bay Beach

Repulse Bay Beach is flooded with crowds on weekends and is beloved by both locals and tourists. Famous for being home to The Pulse, a shopping spot that also hosts multiple upscale cafes, award-winning restaurants and bars, Repulse Bay Beach is also considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Hong Kong. When you’re finished with your swim, try heading down to Tin Hau Temple, a place dedicated to worshipping the Goddess of the Sea.

How to get there: Take Bus 6, 6A, 6X, 66 or 260 from Exchange Square Bus Terminus to Repulse Bay Beach

St. Stephen’s Beach

Just a 10-minute walk down from Stanley Main Beach lies its’ lesser known neighbour, St. Stephen’s Beach. Overlooking Lamma island, the beach is home to a Water Sports Centre, making it a go-to spot for activities like windsurfing and sailing.

How to get there: Take Bus 6, 6A, 6X or 260 from Exchange Square in Central to Stanley Bus Terminus. Then take a 10-minute walk to St. Stephen’s Beach
