Taking cues from the adjacent 1880s stone villas, this new contemporary family house stands out among its traditional counterparts in a conservative heritage suburb in Australia.

“The brief is to create a comfortable and contemporary new single-level family home that nurtures and connects with the conservative heritage street,” says architect and designer Ashley Halliday.

The team at Ashley Halliday Architects referenced the surrounding stone villas with a sympathetically scaled and proportioned gabled pavilion fronting the street. This is reinforced with a front fence integrating slim steel frames to erase a solid distinction between the public and private realms.

Minimalist palette, materials and finishes orchestrate the house and the garden, reflecting the homeowner’s generous spirit, modern taste, dynamic family lifestyle and engaging them with the suburban community. Inside, Tasmanian oak ceiling linings add warmth, the textured oak battens endow the space with rhythm, enhancing the sense of perspective that is directed to the garden.
