Yu Youhong carves wood in Wangkou Village of Wuyuan County, east China's Jiangxi Province, Sept. 20, 2024. The “Three Carvings in Wuyuan” include carvings on stones, bricks and wood, with wood carving being the most representative. Boasting a history of over 1,000 years, the carving craft was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2006. The Wuyuan wood carving focuses on depicting components of Huizhou-style architecture such as beams and window frames. Various techniques are employed to create exquisite images of auspicious Chinese patterns, reflecting the developing aesthetic appreciation and people's longing for a beautiful life. Yu Youhong, an inheritor of the craft, is also committed to protecting and restoring ancient buildings in his hometown. Chen Yuanyuan ® works at a sign language Starbucks in Wuhan, central China's Hubei Province, Sept. 22, 2024. At a cafe in Jiang'an District, Wuhan, deaf barista Chen Yuanyuan makes cups of coffee filled with love for her customers. Five years ago, the opening of a sign language Starbucks in Guangzhou, south China's Guangdong Province, made coffee enthusiast Chen Yuanyuan, who was working in the city at the time, realize that being deaf wasn't an obstacle for her to become a barista. Soon after she quit her job she started her trainee term at Starbucks. For her, making coffee was a challenging job. For instance, a barista is typically trained to judge when the milk has been fully foamed by the sound made by the steam wand. However, Chen and other deaf and hard-of-hearing baristas received training to judge by sight and feeling the temperature with their hands. Disabilities did not deter Chen.
