Floods may occur in the Huaihe River and its tributaries, as heavy rainfall has been forecast in regions along the river system from Saturday to Tuesday, the ministry said.

Water levels of some tributaries may come near or even exceed the warning levels, it said, calling for local governments to make full preparations.

The 1,000-km-long Huaihe River is one of China's major waterways, running through the east of the country between the Yangtze and Yellow rivers.

Since June, continuous downpours have lashed large parts of southern China, and the waters of many rivers in the affected regions have exceeded warning levels.

The country has been making all-out efforts in prevention, rescue, and relief work regarding floods and geological disasters.
