Fijian students demonstrate Chinese proficiency in competition

SUVA, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Fiji held the 16th Chinese Bridge-Chinese Proficiency Competition for foreign secondary school students on Wednesday, with eight students from the Suva-based Yat Sen School participating in the annual event.

The competition, with the theme of "Fly High With Chinese", featured talent shows and Chinese speeches at the auditorium of Yat Sen School, attracting an audience of hundreds of teachers, students and representatives of the local Chinese communities.

Cheers and rounds of applause consistently erupted in the auditorium when the contestants were singing, dancing, and showcasing calligraphy, paper cutting and other skills.

Samara Hughes, a grade 11 student of Yat Sen School, was awarded the first prize and will compete in the final contest on behalf of Fiji.

"I like singing Chinese songs, which inspires my love for learning Chinese," Hughes said, adding that she hopes to have the opportunity to study in China in the future so as to learn more about the Chinese culture.

Wang Xuguang, a counsellor at the Chinese embassy in Fiji, said, "Learning Chinese will surely give you a key to more possibilities in your future." ■
