BEIJING, May 25 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

WASHINGTON -- The White House on Sunday announced travel restrictions on Brazil, which has become the nation with the second-highest number of COVID-19 cases.

"Today, the President has taken decisive action to protect our country by suspending the entry of aliens who have been in Brazil during the 14-day period before seeking admittance to the United States," the White House said in a statement.

QUITO -- Ecuador on Sunday said it has 36,756 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and a death toll of 3,108 since the start of the outbreak in the South American country.

In the past 24 hours, healthcare workers reported 498 new cases of infection and 12 more deaths from the disease.

SANTIAGO -- Chile on Sunday said a total of 69,102 people have tested positive for COVID-19 and the death toll has reached 718.

The Health Ministry's latest report showed 3,709 new cases of infections were detected in the previous 24 hours, with the vast majority -- 3,343 -- displaying symptoms.

ACCRA -- Ghana is close to announcing a roadmap toward easing of COVID-19 restrictions, Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said Sunday.

Akufo-Addo said consultations are ongoing with relevant stakeholders on the form and timing of easing the restrictions.

BUENOS AIRES -- Argentina's capital Buenos Aires on Sunday said it was stepping up social distancing measures in the lead up to an expected spike in cases of COVID-19.

The city announced it would further restrict commercial activity and people's mobility, including by closing certain train stations.

ROME -- Italy recorded just 50 deaths from COVID-19 Sunday, its lowest daily death toll since the COVID-19 outbreak's earliest days, though the hard-hit northern region of Lombardy did not update its death-toll data for the last 24 hours.

The overall trend for the death toll has been improving in recent weeks. After reaching a one-day high of nearly 1,000 in late March, numbers have gradually decreased.

TUNIS -- Chinese medical experts in Algeria on Sunday held a video conference with Chinese people in Tunisia for the prevention of the COVID-19.

Organized by the Chinese embassy in Tunisia, workers from Chinese companies and Chinese people living in Tunisia participated in the video conference.

JOHANNESBURG -- A total of 53 positive cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed at Mponeng mine in Johannesburg, South Africa's Gauteng Department of Health said on Sunday.

The department said all the positive workers have been isolated.  ■
