The "two sessions" are important as China prepares for its 14th Five-Year Plan with a view to retain and reinforce tremendous achievements in poverty alleviation, environmental protection, and financial stability despite negative trends in the world economy, said the Sri Lankan communist leader.

COLOMBO, May 30 (Xinhua) -- China's "two sessions" have demonstrated the country's achievements amid a changing world marked by economic recession and the unforeseen COVID-19 pandemic, a senior communist member in Sri Lanka has said.

In a recent interview with Xinhua, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka D.E.W. Gunasekera spoke highly of the Chinese Communist Party's leadership in containing the COVID-19 outbreak in a short time while providing aid to over 100 countries and international organizations in an unprecedented act of international solidarity.

Commenting on President Xi Jinping's call to analyze China's economy from a comprehensive, dialectical, and long-term perspective, Gunasekera said that, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, China's basic strategy of marketization and state intervention is still valid.

As to the decision by China's top legislature to establish and improve the legal system and enforcement mechanisms for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to safeguard national security, he said, the legislation shows China's desire to maintain economic stability for the benefit of all.

"China has given a strong signal to the international community that it will forge ahead with its 'one country, two systems' policy," he noted.  ■
