Handshake Speakeasy earns first place on the World’s 50 Best Bars list for 2024

Drawing on the expertise of 700 bar industry figureheads from across the globe, 2024’s instalment of the World’s 50 Best Bars list has been revealed. This year’s ranking, spanning 28 destinations around the world, was announced in an awards ceremony in Madrid on October 22 to celebrate tipple talent on an international scale.

The bar that walked away with the night’s highest honour of The World’s Best Bar was awarded to Handshake Speakeasy in Mexico City, known for its minimalist drinks crafted with intricate culinary techniques.

Second place saw the crowning of Bar Leone in Hong Kong that took home first place on Asia’s 50 Best Bars list earlier this year. The only other Hong Kong based haunt on the list is Coa at No. 18, a bar notorious for placing first on Asia’s 50 Best Bars lists three years in a row.

Last year’s winner, Barcelona’s Sips, earned a respective ranking of third place and the title of Europe’s Best Bar with London’s Tayēr + Elementary following at No. 4.

Keeping with the tradition of most 50 Best collections, Singapore proves to be the leader of the pack when it comes to Asia’s bar scene with a total of four entries on the list. Jigger & Pony placed at No. 5, Nutmeg & Clove at No. 28, Atlas at No. 43, and Analogue Initiative at No. 47.

Tokyo’s bar scene was represented this year with two of its bars being recognised. Bar Benfiddich took home the 25th spot with Virtù placing at No. 42. Bangkok followed suit with two entries on the list—BKK Social Club at No. 12 and Bar Us, a new entry coming in at No. 41.

Seoul was also awarded a spot on the list with Zest ranking 9th overall.

Australia’s bar scene was not overlooked with the list seeing Melbourne’s Caretaker’s Cottage place 21st, Sydney’s Maybe Sammy earn the 26th spot, and Byrdi in Melbourne come it at No. 35.

Most notably, though, was the recognition of South America’s cocktail culture, with the continent being represented by 7 entries including Tres Monos in Buenos Aires at No. 7, Alquímico in Cartagena at No. 9, Lady Bee in Lima at No. 16, CoChinChina at No. 22, Tan Tan in San Pãolo at No. 31, La Sala de Laura in Bogotá at No. 44, and Florería Atlántico in Buenos Aires at No. 46.
